Brief:

The main task of this exercise is to create a dynamic animation of a selected facade
system. The purpose of the animation is to visualize the form finding process through
a series of sequences underlining its design logic and performance.

The Centre Pompidou-Metz by Shigeru Ban uses a very complex parametric diagrid that wraps around the internal structure and supports the tensile external covering. It is based on a hexagonal grid that is offset to create an overlapping of grids that don’t intersect in order to increase the structural integrity of the beams.

The structural beams were originally a hybrid of wood and metal in the conceptual and proposal stages, until they were replaced with a completely timber structure which provided both engineering opportunities as well as an aesthetic dimension.

This project explores the process of designing this parametric system through deconstructing the methodology and animating the generated process.
