Parametric Facade //

Reference Facade //Amano Design Office

“Architect Yoshihiro Amano came up with the design for the Dear Jingumae Building after being asked to give the existing structure a new frontage that would allow it to stand out from its neighbors.

“We aimed at a design with a soft expression that would be favorably accepted by passersby while standing out from the surrounding buildings that tended to have physically hard expressions,” he explained.”

Objective

The objective of this exercise is to write the pseudo code for the selected parametric facade and create 3 different variations of the facade by following the steps in the pseudo code.

 Pseudo Code

  1. Create a Curve
  2. Divide The Curve Into Equal Pieces
  3. Create Vertical Lines From The Points That Have Created While Dividing The Curve Equal Pieces.
  4. Create A Amplitude Factor For The Vectors Of The Vertical Line’s
  5. Create The Vertical And Horizontal Contours To Make A Surface. Make Countour Lines Of The Surface
  6. Create Linear Surfaces From The Contours
  7. Create Different Variations With Changing The AmplitudeFactor

Parts Of The Pseudo Code In Grasshopper Script

  •  Create a Curve- Divide The Curve Into Equal Pieces

  • Create Vertical Lines From The Points That Have Created While Dividing The Curve Equal Pieces-
  •  Create A Amplitude Factor For The Vectors Of The Vertical Line’s

  • Create The Vertical And Horizontal Contours To Make A Surface

  •  Make Countour Lines Of The Surface-7. Create Linear Surfaces From The Contours

  • General Script

Variations Of The Design

1st Variation

Instead of using “LOFT” command between two contour lines, I used the “PIPE” command and change the amplitude factor to create a variation of the selected facade.

2nd Variation

In this variation, I tried to create a hexagonal surface and followed along the contour that has been created before. Also, the chance to manipulate the curves gave more option to modify the design.

3rd Variation

As a last variation tried to maximize the thickness of the linear surfaces to create a more opaque facade. With the help of data management, it was possible to re-parameterize the contour lines and modify them.
