LamVerticale.

The Project aims at studying the bending properties of Glulams. The project took inspiration from the famous Salvador Dali’s Persistance of Memory. The way the objects have been bent in space and time was an intriguing aspect that became a catalyst in the shaping of the structure. Persistence of Memory depicts a dream state, the melting and distorted clocks symbolize the erratic passage of time that we experience while dreaming. A similar goal was set in defining the bending of the glulam elements. The structure follows a simple hierarchy in terms of how the load is transferred through the structure. There are vertical members and horizontal members in terms of compression rings which stop the structure from buckling too much.

The Iterative Process..

Exploration began with focusing on roofs and installations. The deforming of the roof shell gave indications towards the limitations of the curvature at which the glulams could bend while retaining the structural integrity.

Design Process

The clear hierarchy and the roles that have been allocated in the design gave a bit of freedom to deform the elements,..
