Theory of Cities Masterclass
Curated by: Mathilde Marengo

The Master in City & Technology prepares the new professionals and urban technologists for the creation of applied visions and solutions that have the power to fuel the progress of urban environments for many generations.
The Theory of Cities course aims to give the MaCT students access to the front runners of this multidisciplinary field, who, through a master class format, share the challenges and learnings of their professional engagements in real case applications. Theory of Cities is, therefore, a platform where the students have direct contact with professionals from diverse areas of expertise, furthering their formation and knowledge towards their own personal development as multidisciplinary change makers.
The course is furthermore oriented towards the development of students’ critical thinking capacities, engaging the students in a series of roundtable debates, questioning diverse approaches and possible outcomes, as well as the development of conclusive papers, buildings towards propositive and innovative visions for practice in our urban environments, along the three central topics of the Master Program: Internet of Cities, Internet of Buildings and Internet of People.

FORMAT
The Course is developed in a transversal manner, throughout the entire Master program, following the main topic of each term: Term 1 – Internet of Cities, Term 2 – Internet of Buildings, Term 3 – Internet of People.
Each Term the students will attend one introductory session on the main topic of that term, with the aim of initiating the critical thinking process related to the specific topic, run by the course curator. This session will then be followed by 3 Master Classes, each with a different invited professional, sharing their diverse expertise and experience, influential to the future of our cities. In the conclusive session of the Master Classes, a roundtable between the 3 Experts will be moderated by the students, as an opportunity for a cross-dialogue and discussion around the main topic.

DELIVERABLES
The students will be divided into groups, and each term will be asked to deliver a paper on the specific term topic, based on the learnings and questions raised during the term.

BIBLIOGRAPHY
A specific bibliography for each term will be provided to the students, in order to give them background and contextual information on the topics treated.
