The project develops a visualization of the international arms trade. It illustrates the data gathered by STOCKHOLM INTERNATIONAL
PEACE RESEARCH INSTITUTE (SIPRI) which contains information on all transfers of major conventional weapons from 1950 to 2018. It can be used to address the following questions;

  1. Who are the suppliers and recipients of major conventional weapons?
  2. Where are potentially destabilizing build-ups of weapons occurring?

The information can be read in the following order (from outermost circle to the center);

  1. Military expenditure in the year 2018 by country, in constant 2017 US$ millions.
  2. Country ranking as per the estimated value (SIPRI estimate) of arms either exported (suppliers) or imported (receivers) between 1950 to 2018.
  3. The total number of arms delivered (suppliers) or ordered (receivers) in the decades between 1950 and 2018.

The visualization is made by analyzing the trade registers maintained by SIPRI, by means of pandas.DataFrame and using functions such as groupby and sum. The processed dataframe is then exported as csv and developed further in Grasshopper to create a visualization based on the values.
