Digital fabrication consists of much more than 3-D printing. It is an evolving suite of capabilities to turn data into things and things into data

1/ CONTEXT

Advanced manufacturing and new design methodologies are not only changing how we work, live and play but reshaping the processes and interactions in the cities and societies. The introduction of those processes into the architectural industry is changing the paradigm on how we conceive the architectural method. This new mediation between the old knowledge and new techniques are making the process as important as the end work, all becoming a whole.

2/ OBJECTIVES

This is a hands-on course oriented towards learning and gaining experience in the use of tools and machines related to fabrication, prototyping and designing through digital fabrication tools. The purpose is to explore the relationship between digital driven design and fabrication manufacturing, at the construction scale. The course will be based on the definition of digital fabrication techniques focused on the convergence between digital modelling and fabrication processes.

At course completion students will:

  1. Gain knowledge of Valldaura Green FabLab.
  2. Understand safety protocols and rules for using the Green FabLab tools and machines.
  3. Learn standard techniques of woodwork and joinery applied to digital fabrication.
  4. Learn how to design and implement functional prototypes using a wide variety of digital fabrication tools and techniques.
  5. Have permission to operate the FabLab machines autonomously (note: the use of CNC Milling and Carpentry must be notified)

This course is part of a broader process of introducing students to Fablab as well as carpentry machines and tools. The use of these tools are integrated within the modules that are taught by various instructors as part of the MAEB curriculum, in order to ensure students learn their use in the best possible context.
