Drawing Progression

The Obstacle and Inertia Machine, functions by distributing pens around windmill like arms, in a circular motion.  The pens map their path as the arms move around the paper, and are further effected by the metal obstacles fixed to the site.

This iteration of the drawing machine has been used to further test variables on the machine.  By manipulating the connections between pen and machine, more consistent pressure has been created.  Differential speeds have been applied to the central motor, to dramatically impact the deflection of pens when they strike on obstacle.

The next stage of the design development will have a greater focus on both the primary structure and the expression of the site.  The structure needs be able to support a greater weight (number of pens), as well as react better to its environment.  While the obsticals may vary and develop, an increased sensitivity to this will allow the machine to measure and record the site, not just impact on it.

In addition to this, details shall be added to the surface treatment of the site, producing bumps and dips in the surface below the page.  This may represent the differentiation between a footpath and the road, or the potholes and protruding tree roots on  an area.   In this way, different patterns will be expressed onto the page.
