MARINE REWILDING

Our seas have been plundered for vast quantities of fish, and swathes of the sea bed have been stripped of life by human activity.
Rewilding the sea is defined as ‘ any effort to improve the health of the ocean by actively restoring habitats and species, or by leaving it alone to recover’. Healthy sea beds drive a richer
marine ecology, so when habitats of the deep blue recover so does everything that relies
upon it.

SITE AND CONTEXT

The site is located along Passeig Joan de Borbó in Nova Bocana, the relatively new leisure area and marina of Barcelona’s port near Barceloneta beach. The buildings date back to 1900-1904 and functioned as warehouses on the Barceloneta.

Differential growth

The inspiration for the design elements within the project is derived from the geometry of “differential growth“. Differential growth is a biological phenomenon that is observed in the natural environment.
The project employs it with respect to design elements, namely, the filtration system on theexterior and as a design strategy for the connection between the workspace and its surroundings.

1. Differential growth occurs when the growth of one part of the cell occures at a different rate from that of another part.
2. Elongation of elements or cells that grow in different directions.
3. Differential growth establishes different levels of organisation and growth pattern influened by external circumstances
