HABITAT+ ELECTRICITY CONCEPT

BARTEK NAJMAN, CHRISTA HÖRBURGER
MAEBB 2021HABITAT+ features an advanced energy design for the entire complex. All south facades are equipped with photovoltaic panels and generate 100% of the electricity needs for all residents. Industrial needs are excluded but not all technical building systems, which operate on a passive model. The electricity gained by the PV plant is responsible for running the machines for the energy/water systems, and provides the outlet power for housing and public areas. Energy for heating and cooling is passively drawn from a water deposit in the basement.

DESIGN STRATEGY
In order to remain true to the thermodynamic principles (sections), there was the challenge of controlling the south facade so that nearly 5000m2 generates electricity throughout the year while opening up during the winter months to enable passive solar gain.

COMPUTATIONAL TOOLS
with the help of Ladybug-PlugIn for Grasshopper we generated and optimized the calculated angles for the PV panels for the 3 main sun positions: Winter, Spring/Autumn and Summer.

ELECTRICITY NETWORK
This diagram shows how the PV-GRID within the HABITAT+ building is connected to apartments, the technical building services, and the public network.
