Activating Public Space – Superilles

The pedestrianized public space is converted into a productive urban landscape, acting as a destination rather than a space that merely contains human and product flows. Two complementary poles are defined and generated by inhabitants themselves – a productive urban agricultural landscape and a square – market space (plaza), both generated by removing and relocating the floor tiles to either reveal or cover the cultivable ground.

Input data: the two poles grow into each other with a vague borderline. This borderline is relocated on an annual pattern, depending on the shadows cast by the surrounding buildings and subsequently the polar coordinates of the sun, with a span of 30 degrees on winter and 60 degrees on summer solstice. The area in constant sunlight, the food related shops and the residences act as attractor points to the borderline.

Machinic protocol: the generative nature of this intervention is being approached through the introduction of a machine. This machine is able to move in all planar directions and rotate around its axis, can be fed with the previous data and as output it deposits sand on the model of the square.
