SE.5 – Elective Seminar
BUILDING OS
Towards the self-sufficiency

Tutors: Vicente Guallart, Pep Salas, Elias Kateb

This seminar addresses this question by giving a structural response to the question “How to build buildings in the information age”.
The challenge is to develop in an holistic way all the layers of the physical structure of the building and its metabolism. At the same time, the challenge is to use design as fundamental tool for it.
The objective of this seminar is to investigate the layers that allow self-sufficient buildings and communities to exist. The students will therefore analyze and develop different complementary layers.

During the first term (January – March), each student will work on a layer of the building and will make a proposal, with all the freedom that innovation allows, but with all the realism to be digitally radical. The proposal will include the material elements as well as the digital platform associated to it.

In the second term (April – June) the students  will develop models of their proposals, working on the application of their ideas on the design project for the extension of the Valldaura campus, and on the proposal for a university residence building in Barcelona.

The seminar will use a visual language representing every idea using schematic diagrams.
