SAGRADA FAMILIA – A CASE STUDY

While the columns initially appear to be modelled for aesthetics only, careful study can derive the logic behind the creation of the columns and the nature of the bifurcation.

 INSPIRATION I NATURE

The inspiration for our structures come from bamboo.  This plant features a hollow and vascular internal structure.  This allows the plant to grow in a columnar rather than tapering manner.  In addition to flexibility, the ‘plates’ gives the stem strength and keep it from bucking under stress.

PROFILES + BIFURCATION

Three profiles where tested computationally (and later physical) with different angles of rotation.  Each profile provided interesting results which allowed us to adapt and finally perfect the design.
