Data Informed Structures Workshop

The objective of this workshop was to explore the feasibility of a ruled surface for our Himalayan retreat for 2 people. The main objective was to design a comprehensive structure using the principle of ruled surfaces with long timber members. While keeping in mind the structural requirements of the design such as harsh wind and snow loads, we also tried to keep the integrity of our concept of a Himalayan retreat: layers of comfort. The structure consists of two truncated cones made up of ruled surfaces placed on top of each other.

The structure is double skinned consisting of an outer polyurethane sheet on the outside and a damp-proofing on the inside with yak wool insulation between these layers. The polyurethane sheet not only acts as a waterproofing layer on the outside but also as an integrated structural system that wraps around the structure to resist wind loads. The PU sheets are pre-fabricated and wrapped around members that fit into niches in the existing structure which are then capped to be secured in place.
