ERRATIC BLOCK: parametric house

April 16th, 2008 admin Posted in Studio Digital Tectonics | No Comments »

/project by Dorota Kabala, Verena Vogler

//ABOUT THE PROJECT

The project has been developed during a time period of moreless 8 weeks in the STUDIO of Digital Tectonics. The first approach was to design a house which is connected to its site and which is changable in many ways. It could adapt to its environment, to its users or to any other parameter.

The site we devided in 3 different spaces: COMMON, PRIVATE and STORAGE. By implementing parameter for each space the user could decide which area (m²), hight or lenght each space should have. This principle is working in a matrix of 3 X 3 (spaces).

It was important to us to leave the front fasade very strict and plane while the backfasade and the outer frame of the building will adopt to the specific parameters.

//COMPONENTS

We used one single component as a base. By changing the parameter of the opening we had suddenly 3 different components for privat, common and storage space. These we implemented in the pattern of the backfasade. So while observing this face of the house one could read the 3 different spaces from outside.

We used two methods to fabricate physical parametric models.

Internet “0″_Nervous BOXXX

March 17th, 2008 admin Posted in Internet 0 | No Comments »

/project by Verena Vogler

The BOXXX contains a mircochip programmed with arduino wich controls three input and three output functions. Sound, light and touch could be used as input while sound, light and rotational movement could be an output.

The ”Nervous BOXXX” works in the following way: If one turns on the light it will become very nervous and excited in all senses. It rotates in a random way, blinks and plays random notes. You could not stop it until you clap your hands or whisle. Immediately it will slowly die, it stops blinking and playing notes. It will just give a last deep tone and a last blink with its eye. If you have a community of these “Nervous BOXXXes” the last dying tone will spread like a desease and kill all the others. Or if the box is faced to the light sensor of another box, the last blink will wake up a dead neighbor. This could go on as long as the community starts to become alive again- a community of “ZOMBIE BOXXXes“.

IGLOO

During the Christmas break I went together with some friends to camp in Switzerland. We started to built 3 different igloos trying to create a space with better thermal conditions than a tent for the night. The third igloo was somehow ”prefabricated” when we used simmilar sizes and shape of the bricks. Inside moreless 10 people could fit. The experience to built a shelter for 10 people to protect from the cold in only 8 hours amazed me.

So in terms of the water bottle research project the old- new idea was to create different igloo structures out of old plastic bottles.igloo-kopie-kopie.JPG

Lorenz Atrractors: How to design an explosion

March 17th, 2008 admin Posted in Scripting | No Comments »

/project by Eduardo Mayoral, Verena Vogler

For scripting class there is our design proposal:

The script will be based on mathematical ecuations where we can find strange attractors, which have to do with chaotic behaviors that a function shows when it is reaching certain points. This pattern faces a simple way to deal with complexity and gives a view of the transition from a smooth shape to a very complex one in which things go completely wild.

The mathematical function “explodes” in some way by trying to reach the specific point. The intense moment of explosion can be captured in form of an image, a thought or even by an abstract model which carries all the energy of the action.

Yesterday the Chilenian artist “…” gave a workshop in Origami. He demonstrated how to built beautiful paper structures out of a simple square paper. These structures are complex and simple at the same time.
