panic_ (noun) 1. a sudden feeling of great fear that cannot be controlled and prevents
you from thinking clearly.
2. a situation in which people are made to feel anxious and there is a lot of
confused activity, especially because there is a lot to do in a short period of
time.

(verb) 1. to suddenly feel frightened so that you cannot think clearly and you
say or do something stupid, dangerous etc.

[ref. Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary]

Distractions create fear and fear creates panic. The greatest latest distractions were caused mainly by attacks, additionally there is something more that now is threatening us, the climate change.
Governments are making more investments on security infrastructures. Surveillance networks are covering the cities and “security fences” are separating them. The news is full of new attacks or protestations and threatening messages. Both the production and the buys of military games have increased.
Moreover, we are now starting to understand the importance and the consequences of the environmental pollution. Both the temperature is increased and many species no longer exist. Since the sea levels are rising, many cities or regions may disappear.
All these distracting information are creating fears and panic and finally they have a severe effect on the societies and the formation of the cities.

Trying to mark out some…
_the hidden and the visible

Check this video from the Guerrilla Geographers.

Their main aim is to challenge the public’ s awareness of the “hidden” geographies. Renu Gupta has mentioned the Guerrilla Geographers in her blog also.

Fence/ Wall/ Barrier

October 21st, 2007 admin Posted in readings | No Comments »

nigelwallstory4831.jpg

Israel’s Separation Barrier, has increasingly attracted international media attention, largely due to the hard-to-ignore scale of the project. The israeli government claims that the fence is constructed due to security reasons. Many citizens of Jerusalem are now cut off basic services. Communities are disconnected from their economic activities. Palestinians claim that have difficulties in getting to their working places and farmers cultivate in the shadow of the new Barrier.

It is almost the most historical parallel to the Berlin Wall.

In this site also they comment about the misleading characterization of this barrier as a “separation fence”, by presenting the semantics of both words, “fence” and “wall”.

bombing targets // before and after

USA Today offered during 2002-2004 an “interactive map of Downtown Baghdad” on the Web where viewers could click on bombing targets and view detailed satellite images of urban sites both before and after their destruction.

Cities are gradually destroyed both, geographically and culturally, and the military culture threatens the societies, since it presents fearful situations.

The fight between the islamist militants and the Lebanese army has left the Palestinian refugee camp, Nahr al Bared, in ruins. 40000 Palestinians left during the fight and now 400 families are permitted to return. Nearly 500 people died during the fight. It is estimated that up to the 85% of the Nahr al Bared infrastructure has been fully or partially destroyed.
