This post delves with some issues regarding Architecture in a global cultural scenario. Globalization has undoubtedly reached every corner of our lives, Architecture is no exception. Time and again Architecture has been the reflection or expression of our culture, in a way it does speak about a particular culture. As Frank Gehry says” Architecture should speak of its time and space, but yearn for timelessness”. But the issue here that I want to discuss is ” Should Architecture be a reflection of just the local culture or just the global culturein order to become a global identity”.
To consider the architecture of Airport terminals, it becomes important at the first place to become a global identity in order to address to the internation participators. But applying this logic only would give a monotonous identity to all terminals. On a other hand, looking at these terminals, one might really wonder whether he is in Hong Kong, Amsterdam or New York? In a way the building faces a local cultural identity crisis.
This is a less fascinating result of globalization.
After all, it is the Great Wall, the gardens and pagodas that represent a Chinese character; it is the Persepolis, the Palace of Darius the Great, the mosques and minarets that showcase the Iranian culture; and it is the palaces, castles and churches that remind people of Western history.
I believe, architecture today should be more than just being modern (post modern) or just be a product of the digital age. It should contain some cultural interpretation too.
