Architecture: Local Culture/Global Culture

This post delves with some issues regarding Architecture in a global cultural scenario. Globalization has undoubtedly reached every corner of our lives,  Architecture is no exception. Time and again Architecture has been the reflection or expression of our culture, in a way it does speak about a particular culture. As Frank Gehry says” Architecture should speak of its time and space, but yearn for timelessness”. But the issue here that I want to discuss is ” Should Architecture be a reflection of just the local culture or just the global culturein order to become a global identity”.

To consider the architecture of Airport terminals, it  becomes important at the first place to become a global identity in order to address to the internation participators. But applying this logic only would give a monotonous identity to all terminals. On a other hand, looking at these terminals, one might really wonder whether he is in Hong Kong, Amsterdam or New York? In a way the building faces a local cultural identity crisis.

This is a less fascinating result of globalization.

After all, it is the Great Wall, the gardens and pagodas that represent a Chinese character; it is the Persepolis, the Palace of Darius the Great, the mosques and minarets that showcase the Iranian culture; and it is the palaces, castles and churches that remind people of Western history.
I believe, architecture today should be more than just being modern (post modern)  or just be a product of the digital age. It should contain some cultural interpretation too.

Design of a tree” project aims at designing a arboreal structure based on a research methodology developed by understanding a natural dynamic structure (a tree). As a part of its first phase that emphasizes on the observation of the tree, the following aspects have been tried to cover.

  • The role of the tree in creating the urban landscape of the city.
  • The physical characteristics of the tree evolved as a part of natural process.
  • Understanding the general structural dynamism of the tree and taking measurements of the  by some observational methods.

This is a blog that provides a platform to discuss issues on Globalization, Migration and their impact on the Global Culture. To analyse thses issues it becomes important to understand the city from all aspects of cultural behaviour. Global culture can be defined as  being able to experience someone’s  own cultural heritage in the context of a foreign community. This platform aims to establish the mechanisms for different communities to exchange valuable information about their lifestyles in such a way that they enrich themselves by adapting those practices they lack. Out of the recent posts in this blog, one delas withaf liveability ranking of cities considering the the categories: Stability; Healthcare; Culture & Environment; Education; and Infrastructure. Technologies should allow global citizens to tap the true power of the web to express their culture and in the process redefine the mechanisms by which travellers immerse themselves in local cultures, facilitating the spread of cosmopolitanism.
