FabLab House wins Peoples First Choice Award
FabLab house has won Peoples Choice Awards at the Solar Decathlon Europe Competition in Madrid. A pioneer in a different approach to design and technology, The FabLab house has incorporated different systems of social spaces, where self-sufficient habitats are able to produce energy, food and other goods. It is developed on a network of fabrication laboratories using CNC machines to design and produce houses that can be customizable by the inhabitants, and at the same time adaptable to the environmental conditions. IAAC Masters Alumini wins FuturArc Prize
Yick Ho Alvin Kung (Hongkong) an IaaC Maters Alumini (thesis in Digital Tectonics) recently won an international competition for sustainable architecture from a Singaporean magazine. His competition entry for the FuturArc Prize is his thesis project, advised by Professor Marc Aurel. After endless nights of hard work the fablab House has been constructed in Madrid. With its theme ‘Form follows energy’, the house is now using the resources of its environment – the sun, water and wind to create a microclimate that will improve the basic conditions of habitability. The fablab house is also now serving as a workshop space where digital fabrication,innovation and creativity is encouraged. This sunday more than 5o children have realized drawings of their ideal solar house. They were supported by the fablab house team to win a fablab house cap with their names digitally imprinted on it.The competition for the next week till the 27th of june, more on the fablab house news can be found at www.fablabhouse.com.

The FabLab House is in Madrid Construction site, ready for the Solar Decathlon Europe 2010 Competition. IaaC Faculty, FabLab House researchers, FabLab team, IaaC students and collaborators are all in Madrid. The competition will stay from the 17th of June till the 27th of the same month. After travelling all the way from Barcelona (IaaC), to Madrid (Construction site), The FabSolar House is now under construction in Madrid. All pieces are there and now being fit together; despite the pouring rain the Solar house team, directed by Daniel Ibañez and Rodrigo Rubio, is working hard to have the house on time for the competition.

Three more days to go for the Fab Solar house to be transported to Madrid, the house is on the process of being finished, electrical installations have been set up, interior furniture is fabricated and ready to be inside, the exterior ramp is also being fabricated and the exterior skin is being put up on every parts. The final push will be on sunday june 6th 2010 when these pieces are all going to be transported to Madrid, for the solar decathlon competition.

Organized by the Iaac fabhouse team, all who are working at the Solar Fabhouse construction at IaaC had lunch at the IaaC premises. There are more than 45 people working on the solar house fabrication, local carpenters from Barcelona, and students from 20 countries are involved in this process. The solar house is furthering ahead with construction.

The 3rd Advanced Architecture Contest with the theme of “THE SELF-SUFFICIENT CITY: Envisioning the habitat of the future” had been organized by Iaac and HP. After having 708 proposals from 116 countries, the Finalists – Sergio Castillo Tello and María Hernández Enríquez from Spain with their theme ‘HURBS’ and Rychiee Espinosa and Seth Mcdowell from the United States with the theme of ‘WATER FUEL’ recieved their awards at the Centre of Contemporary Culture of Barcelona (CCCB).
After presenting the terms of the competition IaaC director Vicente Guallart opened the debate for Michel Rojkind (mexico) www.rojkindarquitectos.com, Willy Muller (BCN) www.willy-muller.com, the other members of the jury and also the winners of the contest. After the awarding ceremony there was also cocktail and video projections of the participants.
