“To hear a sound is to see a space” – Louis Kahn

The district of Poblenou has evolved in the past two decades. The existing changed its purpose as a result of gentrification, the necessities transformed from industrial use to comercial and resident. In the past ten years many spaces have been abandoned -one of this is the Parc of Poblenou. The proposal wants to activate a public space through the use of solar energy, with a machine that generates sound through photonic means. The combination of this prototypes form an installation were people are able to interact depending on the sun light.

The project consists of an intervention that creates an atmosphere for pedestrians, neighbors who uses the area as recreation or also people that use this public space as their transit daily path. The main idea maintains the memory of the place, the identity of the park, the place with water.

Sound analysis | This analysis consists on mapping the frequency of sound that affects the site. The sonic data was recollected at 18 hrs. by measuring hertz and deciblels. As a result getting the acoustic environment.

History | The site is a desolated area in the Parc de Poblenou, Barcelona. It was designed in 1992 as a part of the Olimpic village project and it is located next to the Cemetery Poblenou and to a primary school.
Problem | The park was a home of a fountain that was drained because of the high raise of mosquitos produced by the unused static water of the fountain.
Current | Whilst analyzing the site, it was obvious that there is a lack of activities and it has a lot of potential for reactivation. Not wanting to bring back the same problem with water, intervention seeks to bring back memory, awake interaction of individuals as well as the space by using sound; tapping into one of the most basic of instincts.

Capturing light | Transforming space
SoundDial : (n.) object that derives its energy from the sun and human interaction and that tells time through sound; depending on the day, a new combination of notes is produced that gives the user a sonar understanding of light provoking memories of time and space.

“Whether people are fully conscious of this or not, they actually derive countenance and sustenance from the ‘atmosphere’ of the things they live in or with. They are rooted in them just as a plant is in the soil in which it is planted.” – Frank Lloyd Wright

The methodology of this project gave us the possibility to explore architecture as an atmosphere of sound, looking to enliven space and understand it because of what we hear and feel more than what we see. Users perceive different quality of spaces depending on external factors. In this project the sun gave the energy which allows the movement that generates the sound. The combination of this sounds represents an interactive installation. A memory machine on a solar path base, creating sounds, new way of capturing light and transforming the space to understand new ways of creating spaces.
