Animated Systems – INSIDE/OUT Pavilion

OBJECTIVE

The Animated Systems brief explores the process of form finding and geometry driven design through the animation of a selected pavilion. The process focuses on generating a series of camera movements and sequences that reveal the logical and performative approach to the design parameters.

THE PAVILION

The INSIDE/OUT Pavilion by Eike Schling is located in Munich, Germany and was completed in 2017. The structure is considered one of the first architectural gridshells that makes use of ‘asymptotic curves’. The main design parameters are based on a catenoid, which is represented by the minimal surface located between two circles. The pavilion focuses on new construction techniques that enable a simple fabrication and construction process.

FORM FINDING AND DESIGN PROCESS

In order to explore the main structural and aesthetic qualities of this research pavilion, the following pseudo-code was created and applied:

1.Create an Enneper surface using Lunchbox plug-in and define the start and end domain.

2.Set up the scale of the object in the X,Y and Z axis

3.Extract ISO curve on surface in order to generate a radial structure.

4.Extrude the curves in X and Y direction and set a custom preview - colour swatch for the elements.

5.Construct domain, divide domain and ISO Trim surface.

6.Deconstruct Brep and extract 4 lists of items(points).

7.Set 2 curves for the point lists and Pull Curve onto the base of the main surface.

8.Move curves in Z direction and Pipe them.

ANIMATED PARAMETERS AND SEQUENCES

The dynamic of the animation was created through two main approaches: the animation of separate parameters (scale, structural divisions, etc) and a series of camera control movements that would enable the preview of the object in different stages, locations and scales. For this, techniques such as rotation, zoom in/out and continuous loops were applied.

CONCLUSION

The Animated Systems exercise enabled the investigation of how an architectural object forms, deforms and behaves in relation to the main design parameters. INSIDE/OUT Pavilion served as a research and creative alteration ground for the interactive exploration of computational design systems.
