ANALYSIS + SOLAR PANELS ADDITION

The object of the analysis was the WoZoCo residential project. It is a building aimed at elderly people. The building is composed of a main body, a block, including a gallery li
ke circulation and “merged”, units on northern side. The focus of the project became the southern façade, as it is the one that receives the biggest insolation.

The aim of the proposal is to develop and test a strategy for design and placement of solar panels, taking into account various parameters that would allow to deduce the power usage and therefore finding the value of  necessary power for residents.

CONCEPT

The concept of the design is an intervention that works with the designed language. An intervention that is a creation of another scale, a smaller one that is a natural progression of the elements. Block, suspended block, balcony block and the solar block.

STRATEGY 1 – SMALL GARDEN BLOCKS

This strategy includes small balconies to be added bellow each window on the south façade. This balcony is a sort of a box allowing one to grow food or other vegetation, while the south, east and west facades of the object are covered with panel unites.

With various densities of these elements, the extend of the box would change, “reaching out for the light”.

STRATEGY 2 –  TRANSPARENT BALCONY SURFACES

Using the pre-existing balconies, with their transparent surfaces, a grid of panel unit’s would be placed, providing sufficient gaps for light to enter onto the balcony itself. These grids would be adapted to each of the 3 types of balconies.

RESULT

The result would be a mix of these two strategies, providing the energy required, with a margin of back-up. With the simulation tests, the result has been 1.11%.
