scripting final

March 2nd, 2008 petebooth Posted in Scripting No Comments »

Andrea and I presented our project for the rhino scripting class on saturday. We were very happy with the results, which gave us a script that would create a bench from 4 curves. The script would automatically generate the ribbing and intersection pieces, in addition to laying the components out flat, ready for lasercutting.

you can see a video of the script in action here

The script for the bench is ready to go, all that is left is the intersection subtractions and some fine tuning on the unrolling (hopefully).

caseStudy_ 5 Gbs chip for $10

February 26th, 2008 petebooth Posted in Scripting No Comments »

A new silicon chip developed in Melbourne is predicted to revolutionise the way household gadgets like televisions, phones and DVD players talk to each other.

The tiny five-millimetre-a-side chip can transmit data through a wireless connection at a breakthrough five gigabits per second over distances of up to 10 metres. An entire high-definition movie from a video shop kiosk could be transmitted to a mobile phone in a few seconds, and the phone could then upload the movie to a home computer or screen at the same speed.

scripting_ bench wip again….

February 20th, 2008 petebooth Posted in Scripting No Comments »

Looks like it has been a great night with rhinoScript. I have spent the last 4 hours working away at this and it now creates the central hole without many problems (I’m sure they are in there, I just have to discover them). The next step will be to add the cross-section pieces.

Andrea and I  have our script to a point where it will draw a plane and surface (based on 3 of 4 points) and position it to the corresponing point on the first curve selected. The next challenge is to make a new surface based upon the intersection points of each surface and the 4 curves.  There is still a very long way to go…..

Andrea and I have created a project plan for our scripting assignment until the end of semester. Hope that our technical know-how is up to the challange.

Andrea and I finally got one of our scripts to work almost as we wanted it to. It allows you to select 4 curves and specify how many divisions you want them to be divided into. It will then create points and a surface connecting the 4 points. Depending on which way you draw and select the original curves the output will differ. There are some images below showing the output.

rhinoscript first experiments

As a part of my scripting seminar we were asked to play around with the basic scripts that we developed in class. The first component of my script generates a 3D spiral that has a growing level of randomness in the Z plane as it is elevated. It then prompts the user to input the number of spheres to be dispersed along the curve. It then continues to place spheres along the curve, each one growing in size. The more spheres you have, the closer and bigger they will be. It will also take longer to run the script.

After 11 days in Tassie and a whole lot of flying I’m back in Barcelona, ready to take on the new year and the new semester.

We received our class allocations today and i got almost all the ones that i wanted which is great. So for the next 8 weeks or so I will be studying the following:

Research Studio - Digital Techtonics
Seminar 1 - Internet zero
Seminar 2 - Parametric Design
Seminar 3 - Scripting (rhinoscript)
Seminar 4 - Complex Systems
