readings class two

October 17th, 2007 petebooth Posted in Readings No Comments »

class presentationsShort presentations today of each of the blog sites that we reviewed. It is quite interesting to see the sites of other people, as it would take days to visit and analyse all 100 of them, time that we obviously don’t have. Anyway, my list of sites to visit is now quite long and I need to pay more attention to the heated discussion about USA politics and world opinion.

casa mila - a hulking, delirious beauty

October 14th, 2007 petebooth Posted in Arch+Design Web, Readings No Comments »

The Guardian newspaper of England is running a series on ‘Great Modern Buildings’. It’s quite interesting and on Wednesday 10th October they had an article on Gaudi’s Casa Milar, rating it as number 4.
Check the article out here.

The buildings in order of ranking are as follows:
1. Empire State Building
2. Guggenheim Bilbao
3. Pompidou Centre
4. Casa Milar
5. Jewish Museum, Berlin
6. Eden Project
7. Swiss Re Building (The Gherkin)

the visionaries in style and design

October 14th, 2007 petebooth Posted in Arch+Design Web, Readings No Comments »

Concierge.com has an interesting article about who it classes as the most visionary architects in the world, along with which of their buildings are their claim to fame and also on the horizon. It’s a bit of predictable coffee table list of names and buildings, but they make a few interesting comments on the work. It’s worth a quick read, but don’t loose any sleep over it. Check it out here.

mapping away

October 13th, 2007 petebooth Posted in Mapping No Comments »

deep conversationWe had our first session with the mapping of the old quarter on Saturday. After a couple of coffees at marcat de sant caterina we split our group into three smaller teams, and divided each of the three main areas of the town into three (maybe a few too may threes?).
For our initial sweep of the old quarter we spent between one and two hours in each zones, followed by a quick regroup to discuss our observations and our methods (if they had changed from the original plan). It was a great five hours of wandering through the streets, finding new parts of the city that we were unaware even existed.

hard at workA second sweep will be undertaken in our smaller groups at night to record the differences between day and night life. Monday will be a world of model making for all of us I think.

tree measuring

October 12th, 2007 petebooth Posted in Research Studio 1 No Comments »

joe tightening the linesToday marked a great achievement, Joe and I completed measuring the physical aspects of the tree. We used a number of systems including; locating the junctions of branches in the x,y,z planes, measuring the length of branches, counting typical new growth and calculating the approximate number of leaves and new shoots, photography, climbing and finally texture collection.
I’m sure I missed listing at least one of our methods, but all will be revealed on Friday next week. In the meantime here are a few images of us in action on site!

blog site crits

A fantastic blog concerning all things about architecture and computational culture. The graphics are slick, and the site feels very well put together. It’s also available in no less than nine languages.
Posts are a little less frequent [once every 5 days or so], but they are always great with lots of images and youtube videos. The side bar has links to books and other sites that are relevant to the topics discussed. The best feature of the blog is the journal section that contains numerous technical articles and papers about digital and computation architecture. Papers include: ‘Metaphysics of Genetic Architecture and Computation’, ‘Dazzle Topologies and ‘Genetic Architecture’.
This site has been on my blog list for a while now and it continues to provide a great source for information and inspiration in digital architecture and culture.

Created by a Mexican guy who has worked all over the world for all the big names, this blog has now grown so much he has 4 collaborators working on it. He is now based in Madrid.
Updated very frequently [8 posts alone from October 9th] it covers the areas of architecture, design, contemporary culture and everything in between.
The graphics of the site are a little bland, bit simple and effective, although the site is a little advertisement heavy in the sidebar. The posts all have lots of images embedded youtube video and I’m sure that the text is great, but it is all in Spanish.
