Artificial Intelligence started as a reaction on the behaviourism, a dominant theory for most the half of the first postulating linear relationships between an external stimulus and an organism’s response. In this way early AI is suppose to lack of external presentations and focuses on designing a perfect rational internal system of rules. So AI’s biggest problem seems to be the interaction with the environment and the capability to adapt effectively to spontaneous external stimulations. The so called «frame problem» was exactly the problem of deciding which parts of the internal model should be updated when a change is made to the model or the external world. Empirically observable stimuli were linked with the idea of common sense the biggest problem in AI. The question if you can find a set of rules (schimata scripts) to describe and eventually create a programmable system for common sense was very crucial. The encyclopaedists believe that common sense can be articulated as a series of IF-THEN assumptions while the computational phenomenologist don’t believe in structure rules and experiment on conectionism a procedure linked with cybernetics. The term intelligence is obviously a matter of controversy as Wikipedia mentions but it is interesting for someone to notice that the idea of intelligence as given from the particular encyclopaedia is always referring among other things to the capability for understanding our surroundings and developing adaptive skills, a behaviour that «makes sense» rather than just solving complex problems (or at least it seems to be that something is complex because it consists an external stimulus). Eventually there is a contradiction between intelligence that is used for artificial and for human of course and I think that AlanTuring’s answer on what is intelligence closes this gap: “To respond like a human being”. So I am still not sure if the computational linguistics, the latest extension to the field of lexicography is reconsidering these simplifications. In terms of smart now wikipedia separate the difference between smart and clever whereas intelligence is much more contextual than the other two. Smart means being capable to adapt to the environment while clever means to adapt creatively.

Although we skiped the ephemeral shopping this week I need to mention the medieval market that took place for two days on 26, 27, this weekend. The stall holders were dressed up and other activities were taking place at the same time such as jugglers, music, and street theatre.  

We uploaded the three A0 in the mediafire: page1, page2, page3. In the first page we are trying to sum up the conclusions from the previous time, in the second one we gathered information concerning subjects that you can see in the index. This time we focused in the area around carrer d ‘Angel and tried to compare the size and the number of the floors of the shops in terms of time spending in the shop sociability between the consumer and the owners nationality issues, as well as specifications on the use. The third page is the facades of the streets we studied, we use them to visualise all these observations. I found interesting the fact that the bigger the shop is (for example cortingles) the ability to socialise minimizes and this was obvious if you compared the main streets and its perpendicular ones. We hope that we will be focusing in an another area next week.

These series of diagrams concern ephemeral shopping in diferent times during the week on carrer d’angel..The first one tries to describe human circulation on a celebration day when all the usual shopping areas are closed the second one is on a usual day and the third one is when the street market is not working…..

the last diagram starts describing the diference between the three areas (borne, gotico,raval)…I use the circle as a simulation for the more intimate occupation of space, closed society areas or even getos from (certain nationalities) in an exageration expressing at the same time locality…and the vertical lines to describe more sharp relationships… 

This week me and Evita were trying to learn the program, this weekend we will do a proper model and I hope that next week on Tuesday we will have the “real” tube……
