The aim of Branda is to map La Rambla according to consumption concepts.
For this, we analyzed, categorized, took photos of every shop and we counted people to have an idea of people flow at La Rambla and 23 streets crossing La Rambla.
At the end, we created Branda which can be used and understood easily, giving us informations like density of consumption / people flow / people habits.

Culture and Associations: Workshops

December 14th, 2007 alexander.harris@iaac.net Posted in _CULTURAL & ASSOCIATION, Erik Thorson, Alexander Harris | No Comments »

As the 4th complete overhaul of our map this represents the most concise and simple way to convey all of the pertinent information about workshops with respect to what we have defined as “Places where people Converge to Communicate and Create”. We decided on a black and white map for our final presentation for its different style and approach, that we believe it is easier to move to color from black and white than vice-versa, and the fact that gray-scale is less expensive in replication. Communicating only the necessary information for successful reading while creating an aesthetically pleasing, representational map was our overall goal.

The intention of this map is to trace the associations formed within and around these specific cultural buildings in the old city of Barcelona. The base map traces all these areas of concern with an analysis of the nature of the programs, density of associated people throughout the day and the activities as associated program in the open areas around the specific areas of our concern. It traces some major spots of cultural associations that have been developed as zoom 1, zoom 2 and zoom 3. gotic.jpgborne1.jpg

The centre of Barcelona in a way displays the fact that Barcelona is a “contemporary city of the world”. The old town is a mixture of flows, colors, sounds, smells, people. The network of the restaurants represents this tendency of fusion between the contemporary and the ancient, the local and the global, the static and the constantly moving. The multi-layered development of the old town can easily be identified if someone notices in the map that restaurants of local range are placed close to restaurants that mainly refer to tourists. The mixture of cultures is displayed by the type of food that these restaurants offer, from Chinese to Indian, from Catalan to Argentinean. The nationality of the restaurants represents in a way the differentiation of the citizens of the old town while at the same time divides the centre into sub-areas of unequal economical status, expensive areas like El Borne or poor areas like Raval.

Our interest was to focus on the noise produced by leisure activities and relate it to the general noise measured in the Old City during the day and the night. The developed diagrams show the different levels of noise in all three parts of the Old Town_ El Raval, El Gótico, El Borne and refer them to the Noise Law of 2003. We found out that the noisiest area of Ciutat Vella is El Gótico. In general we were suprised by the fact that the noise levels of the day do not differ much from the night ones.

The “Noise Sequences_BCN”- map relocates the measured sequences  in an abstract grid showing the relationship between each measured spot in the city.

GROUP 5, sub group - ASSOCIATIONS

To understand representation of people through associations in order to represent ‘associations’ on a map. Discovering physical relationship between the association offices (spot) with grade level city, and with their respective sites. As the grade level of old city is captured by commercial set up and tourists, the upper floors and penthouses by residents and hotels, an intermediate layer of associations representing a bigger population of international and political nature establishes its location.

Glo(c)al Eaters: Final Review

In order to depict the trends in Ciutat Vella’s restaurant customer base, the clientele was divided in three general groups: local neighborhood regulars, greater
Barcelona area clients, and tourists. To represent these layers, the population of C.V. was scaled to provide a manageable relation to the number of restaurants. The type of clientele was then separated by its percentage, given our research, to provide an overall view of the patrons visiting the three major areas of Ciutat Vella, El Born, Barrio Gotico, and Raval.

Noise Against the Law

December 13th, 2007 eduardo.mayo@iaac.net Posted in _LISTENINT & LESIURE, Michal Piasecki, Gabriele Pieri, Eduardo Mayo, Mapping | No Comments »

The aim of the map is to compare the level of noise produced in some strategic points in the old city to the level allowed by the 2003 noise law. So on, day and night noise is shown in a circle diagram for each spot and if the level produced is louder than which the law allows, the spot is marked with a red dot. Following this criteria you can identify some conflictive areas delimited with a red line.
