Here are some studies from la Rambla. Great experience to talk to people and to discover their reality underneath the surface. There is an entire universe happening within this urban scenography.

The impact of the communication revolution has generated several learning communities in different disciplines. An interesting development is the transformation on design processes characterized by a interactive and highly participative systems. Some interesting initiatives are Creative Commons and in particular the work of Bruce Mau Design .

I still try to keep working on school and experiencing the challenge of living outside the digital worls for a while.
Promise that I will keep updating my blog as soon as I am able.
Thanks.

Biological processes can help designers to find solutions that are functional, efficient and beautiful. An emerging term “Synthetic Ecologies” uses softwares that are designed to explore biological processes from mathematical rules, such as plant growth, tissue development, etc. The relationship between crossbreeding architecture and science was featured in an exhibition in LA last February.
This video shows “alien plants“ with the complexities and wisdom of nature’s designs.

I used to hate biology. In fact, I studied architecture because I thought I will never have to deal with cells and microbes. I am now deeply interested in the issues of sustainability, adaptive architecture and morphogenesis, which are closely related to biology.
Two interesting websites pointed me in the right direction. A fascinating new discipline has emerged, Biomimicry that studies nature’s best ideas and then imitates these designs and processes to solve human problems. A more technical/academic website is from the McPlank Dept. of Molecular Biology that explores the genetic network mechanisms of adaptive changes. Great inspiration pictures of Developmental Genetics and Protein Evolution.
If you want to see specific examples as they relate to architecture, I would like to highlight another book that is available at the iaac library: “Phylogenesis” foa’s ark. More on this in the next few days.
I am now finally enjoying biology.
STILL THINKING…
One of the most interesting cultural developments throughout world history is the question of permanency and evolution of human society. This question has trespassed multiple layers of activity and meaning: religion, philosophy, politics, economy, etc. With the eminent crises of depleted natural resources and climate change, this question becomes increasingly pivotal in understanding our activities and purpose on earth. The attention is now shifting to a new level of understanding that encompasses and links all layers of human activity: biology.
The Biomimicry blog explains that the wisdom of the natural world in generating systems and ecosystems that are adaptive and evolutive under changing conditions are of ultimate importance. Animals, plants and microbes are the consummate engineers (and architects). The deep understanding of these systems of relationships will provide inspiration and purpose to all human activities.
This may be the key in fulfilling our purpose as contemporary society, a role that was never unveiled by previous generations.
