From a 6m distance the cypress seems to have a homogenous outer layer. The tree resembles a column or a monument.
We only notice the outer layer is not homogenous when coming near to it. We can see it consists of small elements.  A closer look allows us to see the leaves and it’s characteristic structure. Each  branch consists of hexagon resembling elements.
When we observe the cypress’s leafs we notice, that each creeper consist
of similar fractals .This structure brings to mind a coal molecule which is the basic component of trees.

I decided to use the symbol of the coal molecule to build my tree.
While building my model I took under consideration structural analysis and
external factors which influence on cypress structure.

Structural tree analysis
I took under consideration the link between the inside structure and the outer layer of the Cyprus. Is there a border?

I was wondering about the way we join inside and outside.

What is the way nature does it?

What is the chemical structure of a tree?

I think the border between outer and inside are only imaginary. The tree is made from almost identical small elements, so there can be no border, can there?

I think that there are two main exterior factors influencing on my tree:
Wind
1.It comes from outside and it circulates inside the tree in a
characteristic way.
Wind’s molecule (?) break the branches that they meet on their way.
2. This is the way air creates invisible tunnels
3.The air has influence on physiology behavior of the tree.
Rain
We can notice, that rain wets almost only overheads and sides parts of
tree. The parts inside stay dry. From the users side e.g. birds man can
notice, that the birds use the trees as a shelter.

Reassume
Cypress consist of identical coal molecules, which become to me the
basic element of my structure. The outer factors e.g. wind, rain influence on the construction form both outside and inside. They are the factors, which form the tree and all its elements.

Minification
The act of making something less or smaller in order to achieve a faster, smaller and more seemingly simpler life.

Widgification
To utilize a small software devices to compact vast amounts of information and into bite sized chunks. Eg; Desktop widgets within an operating system; RSS readers within the internet environment.

Multi.Scalar
Information that is able to automatically reduce itself to suit the medium that it is being transmitted though. For example, web pages that run at full detail on normal computers, but are self scaling for presentation on a television or mobile telephone.

Macropuncture
The art of distilling an entire system by focusing on an specific individual point that is believed to be representative of the complete system.

Consumology
The science of consumerism and how everyday useless items can be made desirable by the average person.

Time Compaction [expansion]
The utilisation of contemporary minification techniques en masse to compress the access and exposure to information and experiences into a smaller time period.
This phenomena has the reverse effect, it expands time. By experiencing more things in a set period of time, an individuals perception of how much can be achieved is extended, in turn giving the impression of extending time.

digital-arch2-blog.jpg

The meaning of a term material, according to its etymological origins, was inextricably related to its physicality, same as it is with materiality. Recent studies on cyberspace, “electronic nirvana over data lines of global networks” and technological progress lead to redefinition of “materiality”, changing the understanding of materials as physical substances into “immaterial materials”, in a virtual realm. Nowadays materials can be perceived as virtual.
There appears a dichotomy between the virtual and the material world. Despite the increasing to conversion of atoms into bits, as Nicholas Negroponte points out in Being Digital, we still need atoms interact with the bits. If Being Digital is a state of being hooked to the network with one’s point of view flying through empty space, then it is Being Material that makes that connection a reality.
What follows is a question how different is embodiment in the virtual realm from the embodiment in the material realm. Merleau Ponty in his exploration in Phenomenology of Perception comes to the conclusion that the mind and body are intricately intertwined in the project of being in the world. Our vision is perspectival, our body parts determining what perspective we will obtain of the object that is the focus of our attention. . Body without consciousness is dead matter and consciousness without the body has no way to materialize itself. Thus, subjectivity is always embodied in the lived world.
However we can go in our considerations one step futher.
What determines the physicality of materials is its sensual measurment possibility, like for emample visual appearance or touch.
Nowadays technology gradually tend to invent materials, where one of it’s sensual physical characteristics is reduced, like transparentness ( transparent concrete), shapelessness, interactivity a.s.o. Integrating some of those characteristics would create materials, which are still in some way physical, but on a level of perception became immaterial. Their physical structure is fine enough to make them be perceived as invisible. Nanotechnologies enable working on the smallest possible structures, what created a wide spectrum of new possibilities. Understanding material as a structure consisting of milliards cooperating atoms and opportunities of designing them can let us omit thresholds of human perception in the sphere of feeling materiality. For instance there are enormous undiscovered possibilities while working with substances others than solids, like liquids or gases. Particularly among gases, their existance understood in a physical way, is rarely noticed- human senses does not register their physical features. Therefore repartitioning them main functions like dividing, creating barriers, isolating a.s.o. creates a huge potential for developement and evaluation of science or architecture. Ever since, there was a desire to invent materials that could be visible and invisible in the same time, or such that you can go through them. In consequence the boundaries between material and virtual realm slowly start to blur. Somewhere between reality in virtuality atoms and bites could overlap each other, physical substances could be perceived as virtual and virtual – materialized.

Civil Engineers Test New Concrete for Stronger, More Durable Bridges

October 31st, 2007 admin Posted in reading | No Comments »

A new kind of concrete called Ductal will allow bridges to hold more weight and last longer. Made of a mixture of sand, cement, water, and small steel fibers, it is 10 times more expensive than traditional materials but also stronger and virtually impermeable, helping bridges become more durable.

On March 22, 2007, Barcelona’s City Council started the Bicing service, a bicycle service for public transport. Once the user has their card, they can take a bicycle from any of the 100 stations spread around the city and use it anywhere the urban area of the city, and then leave it at another station.
Barcelona City Council is working day and night to expand, rationalize and improve the network of routes and cycle paths in the city. The city has created a ‘green ring’ that surrounds the metropolitan area of Barcelona with a bike path. There are currently 3,250 parking spaces for bikes at street level. Barcelona City Council is constructing a new underground car park for bicycles; this forms part of a pilot program to prevent theft and provide security for bicycle users.

minification - research for this semester

October 29th, 2007 admin Posted in reading | No Comments »

We decided to take as a subject to develop a term “minification”. We would like to explain it and define it by the other terms, like for example:

widgification
multi-scalar
macropuncture
comsumology
open media
time compaction (or expansion).

During this weekend we will try to find a new sources to develop the main topic. Also we will look for 2-4 more words describing our ideas
