IaaC at Smartgeometry Workshop 2016 – Hybrid Domains

Smartgeometry held its yearly workshop and conference, this year entitled sg2016: Hybrid Domains, at the Chalmers University of Technology, in Gothenburg, Sweden, from 4-9 April 2016. The event has been a gathering of the global community of innovators and pioneers in the fields of architecture, design and engineering.

At sg2016 designers and researchers have operated at the edge of their own disciplines, tackling problems that span different knowledge realms. They were challenged question how they work and connect and borrow from other disciplines, thereby creating new hybrid domains.

The sg2016 workshop has been organised around hubs of expertise named clusters, providing a focus for workshop participants working together within a common framework. Clusters have provided a forum for the exchange of ideas, processes and techniques and act as a catalyst for design resolution.

The Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia has been part of the ten selected clusters that responded in diverse ways to the challenge Hybrid Domains. The cluster Mud, Textiles, and Robots for Large Structures, led by IaaC InnoChain Network PhD Candidate Stephanie Chaltiel and Digital & Robotic Fabrication Expert Alexander Dubor, worked with the participants on exploring domes and large spans recursive geometries allowing the construction of earthen shell.

After four intense days of innovative work, the conference has offered an opportunity for critical reflection on the topic of Hybrid Domains and the exposition of what has been accomplished in the workshop.
