“Biomechanics it the research and analysis of the mechanics of living organisms or the application and derivation of engineering principles to and from biological systems. The research and analysis can be carried out in multiple levels, from the molecular, wherein biomaterials such as collagen and elastin are considered, all the way up to the tissue and organ level. ”

“Morphogenesis (from the Greek morphe shape and genesis creation) is one of three fundamental aspects of development biology along with the control of cell growth and cellular differentiation. Morphogenesis is concerned with the shape of tissues, organs and entire organisms and the positions of various specialized cell types.

Permeability , permeable and semipermeable have several meanings:

Permeability (fluid) is a measure of the ability of a material (such as rocks) to transmit fluids.

Semipermeable membrane, a membrane which will allow certain molecules or ions to pass through it by diffusion.

A Sense of Scale, Kramer Junction and Central Park

October 25th, 2007 Eugenio Posted in Uncategorized | No Comments »

 kramer-centralpark.jpg

http://archidose.blogspot.com/2007/10/sense-of-scale.html

“According to Nova’s “Saved by the Sun,” Kramer Junction powers approximately 150,000 homes, or the equivalent of just under two Central Parks at Manhattan’s population density of 66,940 people per square mile. Or to put it another way, turning Central Park into a solar electric generating station, like Kramer Junction (assuming, magically, the same solar conditions as the Mojave Desert), would power approximately 8-10% of Manhattan’s households. While I don’t think this comparison deflates the solar potential, it helps illustrate the enormous areas required, with current technologies, to achieve a more suitable way of creating energy than burning fossil fuels. Of course, this comparison also ignores demand (what I see as a — if not the — key to the current energy “crisis”), in which case the 150,000 might actually increase in Manhattan’s denser and more compact living conditions”.

Imagine a photovoltaic Central Park…a sustainable park where electricity is generated from within and distributed…Even though this is just an idea from an individual, the possibility of having urban spaces of this scale being “sustainable” is an example of how society is worried today about the availability of resources in the future. Can we safely say that our children will be able to live in the same conditions that we do? Is sustainable means not using more resources that you need in order to not alter the resources of the future generations, what is our responsability as architects/planners towards the community? It is not enough to say ‘Ok, lets do this and that”…There has to be a common modus operandi between planners and the government to have a common self sufficient agenda for the future….

Renzo Piano’s sketches

October 22nd, 2007 Eugenio Posted in Uncategorized | No Comments »

I have always been a fan of Renzo Piano’s work. His respect for context, the use of technology and the craftsmanship and an eye for details is evident in his projects. One of the things that I always look for when I see a new project by Renzo Piano is his inital sketch or croquis….it is amazing how the sketch always shows almost all of the information necessary to understand the project. If you compare this sketches with the actual finished buildings, the resemblance is unbelievable.

I have to confess that at the beginning of this class I was a little discouraged at the fact of having to analyze blogs daily….but the good thing is that you can research or look at topics that you are interested in….I found this blog that has a lot of info about architecture, art, design, etc….I will start to look at it daily and make an analysis…

I saw this blog that Peter analyzed and I was quickly interested due to the fact that the guy is from Mexico and has worked for several important firms doing architecture, editorial work, etc…

Edgar labels his firm/studio as a visual disruption, an archi/social/design adventure where anything goes…He is based in Madrid and frequently collaborates with universities and design studios for advertising, marketing and other campaigns. It is a simple and powerful blog. It focuses on having clear images that give you information about a certain project and can link you to that site….In that sense, this blog doesn’t have a lot of proper content made by them….they focus on directing people to other blogs and sites. The blog has posts ranging from architecture to urban design, landscaping, emergent culture, industrial design and others….

Context Weblog-An Emerging Cultural Observatory is an artistic blog, not so much interested in advertising like Florida and the Creative Class but more like a public platform for people to talk about their interests and points of view. This blog claims to have received more than 1 million visits in 2005 averaging 100-120,000 visitors per month…Interesting mix of articles ranging from lots of different topics. The structure of the blog is not too multimedia/interactive and the only way to check previous comments is by accessing the archive in the bottom of the URL.

Variety of articles and topics like

“Learning to smell the roses”

“Watching with intent to repeat ignites key learning area of brain”

“Mental link between actions and words”
