If we would look for the meaning of the word Eco- we will realize that has to do with the habitat itself and its environment, but not also. In everybody´s mind there is the idea of linking eco- to what is supposed to be “green” thinking in an ecologist way (which is not an ecological one). So on, Felix Guattari (1990) talks about three different kinds of ecologies related to mental social and ambient states. Furthermore, Eco- means resonance, and it is related to reflected sounds, so that, in a sense we could talk about eco- as the resonance way of living (in) an environment.

But what about co-? Co- means meeting, cooperation, adding, reciprocity, interaction, (inner)relationships… It refers to the idea of acting and taking part in processes so that commensalism and symbiosis became the main patterns of behavior. Michel Serres (1991) explains this concept when he proposes a natural way of living in/with Earth. But these agreements between humans and our planet are not the only way of approaching to the “co- idea”. In general, negotiation between individuals is a way of generating multi-individual bodies, which means emergence (Valle 2001).

What is able to subsist without help and consumes the less energy as it is possible (or produces all the energy that consumes) could be named self-sufficient. In this sense, what auto- means, it refers to the capability of developing and administering energy on its own. However, auto- has to do with own-self properties so that auto-beings are no other than those that can (re)produce much more of themselves. So on, Edgar Morin (1977) talks about (re)organization and (re)production while he does about “machine-beings”.

Re- means repetition, backward movement, strengthening, escalation. Re- is a second derivative of thoughts, it consist on thinking again what was thought before. Re- is a way of given meaning again to upgrade what was outdated. Re- consist on manipulate preexistence to built and un-built, weave and un-weave, do and un-do. Re- is the opposite as throw out and implies to take positions because of encouragement. Re- is not finished, it is process.

Due to we are about finishing our first month in this master course which topic is “Self-sufficient Habitat”, in my opinion it´s time to start talking about sustainability, and maybe it would be useful to do it from these three prefixes using culture as a reference frame:

As you will guess reading my first post talking about the meaning of atmospheres in architecture; without forgetting design, I am more interested in the effects that objects can produce than in the objects themselves. Every experience that could help you to understand how to live a space, and in a sense, how to know much more of yourself by exerimenting not only materiality but what is not exactly physical, is very interesting for me. In my opinion “good architecture” might be the one that offers you the possibility to grow as a person, the one that lets you be as the same time that suggest you many different ways to do it. That is why I have chosen a topic related to atmospheres and ambient.
Also it is very important the way to do it, meaning that if nowadays we demand the same amount of products that serial production lets you create but in a “non standard way”, we must find how to gnerate architecture like that. It would allow us to produce much more quality with less effort at the same time that we would be able to customize each work in a “serial way”. So on, non standard production is my other topic.
In order to establish some relationships between different iaac subjects in a way that I could express what is going on inside my mind and discuss it with my reading group including their topics and points of view, I propose to build an artificial tree (as my own work or not), with non standard techniques so that it could work as a kind of urban furniture or infrastructure that generates a special atmosphere around itself by manipulating visual or smelling aspects in its surrounding. It would has to do with the topics of my group: redefinition of urban space, what is virtual (understood as a space of possibility in a Lévy sense either if it is build or not), and of course with memory and locative media. Obviously, this exercise is the tree studio project.

In a non physical way of representing or mapping the city, the “Shapesound Frame” proposal pretends to understand noise and sound as useful information to develop maps as tools, meaning not only graphic screenshots but also new paths of understanding life in the city. So on, these maps “built from sound” show the areas that work as attractors and detractors for the people depending on noise.

These are some sketches showing how to build a topology “made of sound”. The aim is to transform noise into shape by extruding a 2D diagram that talks about causes of noise in the city, adding the parameter of the level of sound.

The model that we proposed for the mapping it´s not exactly a physical one. Instead of it, the model consists in some bubbles which are able to reproduce different sounds of the city to create different atmpospheres. These bubbles will be floating around the space inside a room in a random way, so that the noise become shape in somehow. The aim is to generate effects that produce new ways of understanding space from non physical parameters, in this case noise.
